New York is known for the modern and unique architecture of its buildings. Dazzling skyscrapers, residences and political institutions are some of them. Here is a list with the 9 most beautiful buildings in New York. These are masterpieces of contemporary art, each for different reasons.

1. The Flatiron Building

It is one of the most iconic skyscrapers, although the Flatiron Building was first constructed in 1902. This triangular 22-story building with a height of 285 feet (86.9 m) steel-framed is located at 175 Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron District neighborhood of the Manhattan borough.

2. New York City Hall

Home to the Mayor’s office, New York City Hall is a National Historic Landmark located at the center of City Hall Park of Lower Manhattan. It is  the oldest  city hall in the United States that still houses its original governmental functions, as it was built between 1803 and 1812.

3. The Ansonia Building

The Ansonia is a beautiful apartment building located at 2109 Broadway, between West 73rd and West 74th Streets. Constructed by architect William Stokes in 1899-1904, it was originally designed as a residential hotel by William Earle Dodge Stokes and now it holds 425 apartments of varying sizes.

4. The Chrysler Building

The Chrysler building is  one of the most recognizable examples of Art Deco architecture located in the Turtle Bay neighborhood on the East Side of Manhattan. It was designed by architect William Van Alen and built in 1930 to house the offices of the Chrysler automobile industry. Today the building is the fourth tallest in New York with a height of 1,046 feet (318.82 m).

5. Grand Central Terminal

Grand Central Terminal is the iconic railway terminal at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Opened in 1913, the beautiful terminal has been distinguished for its distinctive architecture and interior decoration, earning its name as the National Historic Landmark.

6. Bryant Park Hotel

Τhe Bryant Park Hotel was originally the American Radiator Building built in 1924. The landmark 26-story building of 338 ft (103 m) height was made from black brick to symbolize coal, along with some sections of gold brick so as to symbolize fire.  It is located at 40 West 40th Street, in midtown Manhattan.

7. Cathedral of St. John the Divine

The Cathedral of St. John the Divine at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue of Manhattan is one of the five largest church buildings in the world. Its construction began in 1892 but still an unfinished building due to several major stylistic changes and work interruptions.

8. Jefferson Market Library

Before it became a library, the building was originally a courthouse. It was built between 1875 and 1877 designed in Victorian Gothic style by architects Frederick Clark Withers and Calvert Vaux who also helped design Central Park.

9. The General Electric Building

Located at the southwest corner of Lexington Avenue and 51st Street, this octagonal gothic tower is a historic 50-floor skyscraper with a height of 640 feet (200 m). A hallmark of the building is the magnificent lightning bolt that symbolizes radio waves and the power of electricity.
