New York City ranks among the world’s top destinations for 2026

There’s something about New York City that leaves a lasting mark on everyone who visits. The energy, diversity, and nonstop rhythm of life in the Big Apple continue to captivate travelers — and now the city has once again earned global recognition.

According to a newly released ranking of the Best Cities in the World for 2026, New York secured an impressive fifth place. The list highlights some of the most dynamic urban destinations across the globe, placing NYC alongside major international hotspots such as London and Edinburgh in the United Kingdom, Shanghai in China, and Melbourne in Australia, which claimed the number one position this year.

So what makes New York stand out among so many iconic cities? Its powerful cultural identity is a major factor. The city offers a unique mix of historic landmarks and constantly evolving trends, creating an atmosphere that feels both timeless and cutting-edge. For many visitors, it’s not just a place to see — it’s a place to experience deeply.

Local residents clearly share this sentiment. In a global survey, 78% of New Yorkers described their city as the most exciting place on earth — the highest score recorded among all destinations included in the study. The city’s culinary scene also played a significant role in its ranking, with 91% of locals praising the quality and diversity of its restaurants. Meanwhile, museums, galleries, and cultural institutions received an even higher approval rating of 93%, reflecting New York’s status as one of the world’s leading cultural capitals.

The ranking was based on feedback from more than 24,000 people living in 150 different cities worldwide. Participants evaluated affordability, food options, quality of life, and the overall atmosphere. These findings were then combined with insights from over 100 urban experts to create a list that not only inspires travel plans but also offers a broader perspective on what makes a city enjoyable to live in and explore.

New York’s recent accolades don’t end there. In 2025, the Brooklyn neighborhood of Red Hook was also recognized internationally, named one of the coolest districts in the world — further reinforcing the city’s reputation as a trendsetting destination.
