New York City’s Biggest Outdoor Pool Is Reopening for Summer
Summer in New York is about to get a lot cooler. One of the city’s most beloved warm-weather landmarks, the famous Astoria Pool in Queens, is returning with a refreshed look, modern upgrades, and free admission for everyone.
Set to reopen on Saturday, June 27, 2026, the historic swimming destination has undergone a large-scale renovation designed to preserve its character while introducing major improvements for visitors. After a lengthy closure, locals and travelers alike can once again enjoy one of New York City’s most iconic places to escape the summer heat.
A Historic Landmark Receives a Modern Makeover
The renovation project carried a price tag of approximately USD 19 million and was completed as part of the city’s broader “Let’s Swim NYC” initiative, a long-term investment plan focused on strengthening public aquatic facilities throughout New York.
Originally opened in 1936, Astoria Pool has long been recognized for its impressive Art Deco architecture and enormous size. Rather than replacing its historic identity, restoration teams focused on modernizing essential infrastructure while maintaining the pool’s classic design elements.
Among the improvements are a newly installed 55,000-square-foot waterproof pool lining, upgraded filtration and water treatment systems, and enhanced lighting and ventilation technology. The result combines modern functionality with the architectural charm that has made the venue a city landmark for decades.
Visiting Hours and Entry Information
One of the biggest advantages for visitors remains unchanged: admission is still completely free regardless of age.
To maintain water quality and cleanliness standards, the pool will operate under a split daily schedule. Visitors can swim during two separate sessions, with a dedicated cleaning and sanitization period taking place between them.
Opening Day:
Saturday, June 27, 2026
Daily Schedule:
• Morning session: 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
• Cleaning period: 3:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.
• Afternoon session: 4:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.
The pool entrance is located near 19th Street and 23rd Drive in Astoria. Officials also recommend checking NYC Parks updates for weather-related schedule changes before visiting.
More Than a Pool: A Summer Destination With Skyline Views
Astoria Pool holds a unique place within New York City’s public recreation system. As the city’s largest outdoor public swimming facility, the enormous pool stretches roughly 328 feet and can accommodate up to 3,000 swimmers at a time.
Its setting is equally memorable. Located inside Astoria Park, the venue offers striking views of the East River along with the surrounding RFK Triborough and Hell Gate bridges. On clear days, visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of Manhattan’s skyline, creating one of the city’s most scenic public swimming experiences
The reopening also arrives alongside upgrades throughout the surrounding park area, including improvements to pathways near the Great Lawn, additional seating areas, and new recreational spaces.
As temperatures rise across New York City, the return of Astoria Pool provides more than just a place to swim—it revives a historic community space and a classic summer tradition.
