The global passport power rankings are in for summer 2026 – here’s where the UK ranks
The latest global passport rankings for summer 2026 show which travel documents offer the greatest benefits to international travelers. Europe once again dominates the list, with the United Kingdom securing a place among the world's top 10 most powerful passports.
According to the fifth annual Passport Index published by Global Citizen Solutions, the UK passport ranks eighth worldwide, just behind Ireland in seventh and ahead of Norway in ninth.
British passport holders can currently visit 186 destinations without obtaining a visa in advance, making the passport one of the strongest options for international travel.
Unlike rankings that focus solely on visa-free access, the Global Citizen Solutions Passport Index evaluates passports across three criteria. The first measures global mobility by counting the number of destinations accessible without a visa. The second considers a country's investment appeal, taking into account factors such as taxation, innovation, and economic competitiveness. The third examines overall quality of life, including healthcare, public safety, climate, and social infrastructure.
The 2026 rankings show that nine of the world's ten highest-ranked passports belong to European countries, highlighting the region's continued strength in global mobility and living standards.
Patricia Casaburi, CEO of Global Citizen Solutions, said the UK's passport maintained its strong position largely because of the country's excellent quality-of-life rating. She added that the UK's mobility score ranked only 30th, which is relatively low compared with other leading passports.
According to Casaburi, this reflects one of the lasting consequences of Brexit. While British citizens still enjoy extensive visa-free travel, the index does not account for the loss of automatic rights to live, work, and settle in the 27 member states of the European Union.

In its first 2026 edition, released in January, the UK shared seventh place with Australia, Latvia, and Liechtenstein based solely on visa-free access.
