The world's largest ships are sailing into NYC for America's 250th anniversary this July
This July, New York City is preparing for one of the most spectacular celebrations in its history—and it’s happening on the water.
To mark the 250th anniversary of the United States, an extraordinary international gathering of tall ships will arrive in the city as part of the much-anticipated Sail4th 250. With more than 60 vessels representing over 20 countries, it’s set to be the largest flotilla of its kind ever assembled.
The city’s deep historical roots—once serving as the nation’s first capital—make it a fitting stage for an event of this scale. It’s also the biggest tall ship celebration since the famous United States Bicentennial in 1976. Adding to the excitement, highlights from the event will be broadcast nationwide by NBC during a special Fourth of July program.
Event Schedule: When to Experience the Action
The festivities stretch across several days, offering plenty of opportunities to see the ships in motion and up close.
July 3 (1:00 pm – 3:00 pm): A scenic Parade of Sail kicks things off along the East River, featuring elegant Class B vessels.
July 4 (9:30 am – 2:00 pm): The main parade takes center stage as more than 30 towering Class A ships travel along the Hudson River, passing landmarks from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge up to the George Washington Bridge.
July 5–8 (10:00 am – 6:00 pm): Visitors can board many of the ships for free during public open hours.
July 9 (10:00 am): The celebration concludes with the Five Sisters Cup race, as the fleet departs toward Boston.

Each viewing location offers a different perspective, whether you want history, skyline views, or a closer look at the vessels.
South Street Seaport (Manhattan): A historic waterfront setting that perfectly complements the ships.
Brooklyn Bridge Park (Brooklyn): Ideal for panoramic views of Manhattan while watching the fleet arrive.
Staten Island Homeport: A great location to see U.S. and allied naval vessels up close.
Pier 36: The place to arrange boat tours and experience the ships directly from the water.

This once-in-a-generation celebration is expected to attract more than six million visitors to the city.
As if that weren’t enough, the excitement overlaps with a major global sporting event: a knockout-stage match from the FIFA World Cup will be held nearby at MetLife Stadium on July 5. With both events happening simultaneously, the city will be buzzing with international travelers.
If you’re planning to attend, arriving early and preparing for heavy crowds will make the experience much smoother.
Whether you’re a maritime enthusiast or simply looking for a unique way to celebrate Independence Day, this event promises unforgettable views and a vibrant atmosphere.
