Tourist’s Italy dream vacation takes nightmare turn after she’s kidnapped twice in one day
An Australian woman has spoken publicly about a frightening experience she says unfolded during a solo trip to Sicily, where she alleges she escaped two dangerous situations involving different men on the same night.
Stephanie, a 36-year-old executive from Melbourne, traveled through Europe last October with friends. After they returned home, she remained in Italy to continue exploring on her own. She had hoped to learn more about Italy's well-known €1 home initiative, which offers abandoned properties for symbolic prices, and spend time kiteboarding near the Sicilian town of Lo Stagnone, close to Marsala.
According to Stephanie, the evening began with a casual social gathering involving local kiteboarders. As the group prepared to continue the night at another venue, she accepted a ride from a man she had met through the gathering.
She says the situation quickly became alarming when the driver accelerated dramatically despite her repeated requests to stop and let her out. Feeling increasingly unsafe, Stephanie shared her live location with her kiteboarding instructor while trying to remain calm.
During the journey, she became convinced that something was wrong after overhearing a conversation suggesting the driver intended to take her somewhere private without the others in the group knowing.
After traveling several kilometers, the vehicle entered a gated property. Stephanie noticed that the car door was unlocked, seized the opportunity to escape, and ran from the property. She later hid nearby to make sure she was not being followed before continuing on foot.
Eventually, she reached a nearby town, where she encountered a security guard. Unable to communicate easily due to the language barrier, she used a translation app to explain what had happened. The guard agreed to drive her back to her accommodation.
However, Stephanie says the second journey also became uncomfortable. She alleges the driver stopped the vehicle and used the translation app to ask what she would do in return for the ride. Feeling threatened once again, she exited the vehicle and fled into a nearby vineyard.
Determined to make it back safely, Stephanie walked toward her hotel while avoiding passing vehicles whenever possible. She also purchased drinks from vending machines along the way, believing the electronic transactions could help establish her movements if needed.
She eventually reached her accommodation safely but described spending the following day in shock. After speaking later with members of the kiteboarding community, she said they were deeply distressed to hear about what had happened.
Despite the traumatic experience, Stephanie emphasized that she does not believe the incidents reflect Italy or its people as a whole. She noted that the first man involved was a European expatriate and stressed that violence against women is a global issue rather than one limited to a particular country.
For now, she says her plans to purchase and renovate a home in Italy have been postponed. Although she still appreciates the country, she intends to avoid undertaking such projects alone in the future.
Her experience serves as a reminder for solo travelers to remain cautious, trust their instincts, keep trusted contacts informed of their whereabouts, and prioritize their personal safety whenever something feels wrong.
