Travel advice for Americans in Mexico as serial killer fears sparked after 3 women found dead in popular tourist spot

Puerto Vallarta remains one of Mexico’s most popular vacation destinations, attracting millions of travelers each year with its beaches, lively nightlife, ocean activities, and coastal charm. For American tourists in particular, the resort city has long been a favorite getaway, drawing an estimated two million U.S. visitors annually.

However, recent events have raised concerns and prompted renewed discussions about travel safety.

Authorities are currently investigating the deaths of three women whose bodies were discovered in separate locations around the Puerto Vallarta region over a relatively short period. The incidents have sparked questions over whether the cases may be connected.

According to reports from local authorities, the first victim was found on May 10 near Rancho El Pirulí in the Chimborazo area. A second woman was later discovered near a roadside location along a highway. More recently, investigators found a third body on a dirt road in the Parque Las Palmas neighborhood.

Officials stated that the women were believed to be between 30 and 35 years old. Reports also indicated signs of violence and noted similarities in the circumstances surrounding the discoveries, leading investigators to examine possible links among the cases.

Law enforcement agencies are now reviewing surveillance footage and forensic evidence as they continue their investigation. Authorities are also considering whether the victims may have died elsewhere before being transported to the Puerto Vallarta area.

For travelers planning a trip to the region, U.S. government officials continue to advise caution. The state of Jalisco, where Puerto Vallarta is located, currently carries a Level 3 advisory from the U.S. State Department. This designation encourages travelers to reconsider travel due to concerns about crime, kidnapping, and security risks.

Government guidance notes that criminal organizations operate within parts of the state and that incidents involving rival groups have occasionally occurred, including in areas frequented by visitors. At the same time, officials have stated that there are no specific travel restrictions currently in place for Puerto Vallarta and nearby tourist destinations.

Americans planning a visit are encouraged to stay informed and take standard travel precautions. One recommendation from officials is enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which provides security updates and allows travelers to receive important information while abroad.

Puerto Vallarta continues to welcome visitors from around the world, but, as with travel to any destination, staying informed about local conditions and monitoring official updates can help travelers make informed decisions before departure.
