Trump plans record July 4 fireworks show
Visitors celebrating Independence Day in Washington, D.C., can expect a later, longer fireworks display over the National Mall this year. It is scheduled to begin much later than usual, run significantly longer, and could set a new Guinness World Record for the largest fireworks show ever presented.
According to organizers with Freedom 250, the public-private organization coordinating events for the United States' 250th anniversary, the fireworks are expected to start after 10:30 p.m., with the possibility of an 11:00 p.m. launch. The show is planned to continue for approximately 40 minutes, making it much longer than previous National Mall displays.
Traditionally, Washington's Independence Day fireworks begin just before 9:30 p.m. and last 17 to 25 minutes.
Although officials have not provided a formal reason for the delay, President Donald Trump has announced he plans to address the crowd beginning at 9:00 p.m., describing the evening as a major celebration. Organizers have also confirmed that the expanded fireworks program is part of an attempt to earn the Guinness World Record for the world's largest fireworks display.
Danielle Alvarez, an adviser to Freedom 250, said the event is designed to reflect the importance of the nation's 250th birthday, calling it a once-in-a-generation celebration.
The later start time has generated mixed reactions online, particularly because visitors have been encouraged to arrive early despite forecasts predicting temperatures above 100°F (38°C). Some attendees have also expressed concerns about event rules that restrict items such as coolers, lawn chairs, large bags, and more than one bottle of water inside the National Mall.
To help guests stay comfortable, Freedom 250 says four complimentary hydration stations will be available throughout the event area. Organizers have stated they will continue monitoring weather conditions and make adjustments if necessary to help ensure public safety.
Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser has also encouraged visitors to prepare for the extreme heat. During a news conference on Independence Day security, she noted that spending an entire day outdoors could be challenging, especially for families with young children, and suggested that some families may prefer to watch the fireworks from home or attend neighborhood celebrations.
If successful, the record attempt will surpass the current Guinness World Record set during a New Year's Eve celebration in the Philippines in 2016, when approximately 810,000 fireworks were launched over a period of just over an hour.
Stephen Vitale, CEO of Pennsylvania-based Pyrotecnico, said the company intends to fire more than 850,000 fireworks from ten separate launch sites, including West Potomac Park, the Reflecting Pool, and barges along the Potomac River.
Vitale explained that favorable weather will play an important role in the display's success, as a light breeze would help clear smoke and improve visibility for spectators.
He also noted that a typical Fourth of July celebration on the National Mall uses around 20,000 fireworks, making this year's production about ten times larger than any previous show his company has organized in the nation's capital.
Beyond setting a record, organizers hope the event will leave a lasting impression on visitors. Vitale said the true goal is to create an unforgettable experience, emphasizing that, while the show's scale is remarkable, the lasting memories and visual beauty are what people will remember most.
