Wizz Air UK Gains Approval to Launch Flights to the United States

Low-cost carrier Wizz Air UK has secured official authorization from the United States Department of Transportation to operate services between the UK and destinations in the United States.

For now, the airline intends to focus on charter operations for major sporting events, including transporting European football teams and supporters to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nevertheless, the approval represents an important milestone, as it also provides the legal framework required for the airline to introduce regular long-haul passenger flights across the Atlantic in the future.

To make these routes possible, Wizz Air plans to deploy the Airbus A321XLR — a next-generation narrow-body aircraft designed for extended range. With enhanced fuel capacity and improved efficiency, the jet can fly nonstop between the UK and cities along the US East Coast.

This development raises the prospect of ultra-affordable transatlantic travel returning for everyday travellers. In the past, budget airlines such as Norwegian and WOW Air attempted similar routes linking Europe and North America, but eventually withdrew due to rising operational costs. Wizz Air’s business model is built around keeping expenses extremely low, which could enable the carrier to offer significantly cheaper fares if it launches scheduled long-haul services.

That said, not all passengers may find the experience appealing. Ultra-low-cost airlines typically prioritise price over comfort, and features such as seat space, onboard entertainment, and overall cabin amenities are generally designed for shorter flights. As a result, some travellers may still prefer traditional full-service carriers for long-distance flights.
