It's official: this country has the cleanest coastal water in Europe
Beach vacations are typically synonymous with lounging on golden sands and soaking up the sun. But murky waters can be a letdown for those who enjoy a refreshing dip, snorkeling adventures, or picture-perfect moments for social media. If you're heading to Croatia, this won't be a concern. Recent reports have crowned this Balkan gem as having Europe's cleanest coastal bathing waters.
A comprehensive report, jointly released by the European Commission and the European Environment Agency, meticulously surveyed the water quality across 27 EU states, as well as Albania and Switzerland. The findings were nothing short of impressive for Croatia. Out of 894 coastal sites tested, 886 were rated as having 'excellent' water quality. This translates to a staggering 99.1 percent of Croatia's coastal waters being pristine.
Now, you might be wondering, what exactly does 'excellent' water quality mean? Under the Bathing Water Directive, waters are rigorously assessed using microbiological data to classify them into four categories: poor, sufficient, good, and excellent. This classification ensures that the waters meet stringent health and safety standards, providing a secure environment for recreational activities like swimming and snorkeling.
While Croatia leads the pack, other countries boast exceptional coastal water quality. Greece, Cyprus, and Austria are close contenders, each with their stretches of beautiful, clean beaches. These destinations, known for their stunning coastlines, prioritize water quality, ensuring safe and enjoyable beach experiences.

The report highlighted a trend: Europe's coastal waters tend to be cleaner than inland waters. Several factors contribute to this, including better water circulation in coastal areas and more stringent conservation efforts. This makes coastal destinations attractive to those seeking clean and safe swimming spots.
