Limited-Edition U.S. Passport to Debut for America’s 250th Birthday
Travelers and collectors alike will soon have the chance to own a unique piece of American history. To celebrate the United States' 250th anniversary, the U.S. government is introducing a special-edition passport available in limited numbers beginning in July.
Unlike regular passport updates that focus on functionality, this commemorative version is primarily designed as a collector’s item. While it offers the same travel privileges and security protections as a standard passport, it stands out through exclusive artwork and anniversary-themed design elements.
Among the most notable additions is an interior page featuring a portrait of President Donald Trump accompanied by his signature in gold. Traditionally, only a select group of U.S. presidents have been represented in American passports through imagery associated with Mount Rushmore, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
The exterior of the passport also receives a distinctive makeover. The front cover displays “United States of America” in prominent gold lettering, while the back cover incorporates a gold American flag and a special “250” emblem surrounded by stars, highlighting the nation’s quarter-millennium milestone.
According to State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott, the commemorative passport combines custom artwork with enhanced visual features while maintaining the advanced security standards found in all U.S. passports.
Those hoping to obtain one will need to act quickly. The special passport will only be available to applicants who submit their applications in person in Washington, D.C., beginning around Independence Day. Officials expect production to be limited to approximately 25,000 to 30,000 copies.
Travelers applying elsewhere in the United States, or those renewing online or by mail, will continue to receive the standard passport design. At present, routine passport processing generally takes four to six weeks, while expedited applications are typically completed within two to three weeks. Travelers facing urgent international travel needs may still qualify for appointments at passport agencies under specific circumstances.
The passport is not the only travel-related item receiving a patriotic redesign. New versions of the annual America the Beautiful national park passes will also feature images of President Trump as part of the country’s 250th anniversary commemorations. One version includes his portrait alongside George Washington, while another military-focused pass shows the president saluting.
With limited availability and a design tied to a historic national celebration, the commemorative passport is expected to attract significant interest from travelers, collectors, and history enthusiasts eager to mark America’s 250th year.
