Qantas flight diverted after passenger allegedly bites crew member

Passengers aboard a long-haul Qantas journey from Melbourne to Dallas-Fort Worth experienced an unexpected disruption after an incident involving a traveler reportedly forced the aircraft to divert to Tahiti.

Flight QF21, which was on an approximately 18-hour flight from Australia to the United States, changed course and landed in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia. Flight tracking information indicated the aircraft still had roughly 11 hours remaining before reaching its final destination when the diversion occurred.

According to reports, local authorities met the plane upon arrival and removed a passenger who had allegedly become involved in a confrontation with the cabin crew. Media reports later stated that the individual has since been prohibited from flying on any airline within the Qantas Group network.

The incident gained further attention after comedian Mike Goldstein, who was on the same flight, shared footage on social media.

A video circulating online reportedly showed fellow travelers stepping in to assist flight attendants as the crew tried to manage the situation. In the footage, the passenger appeared disoriented and unsteady as they interacted with airline staff near the aircraft restroom.

During the exchange, crew members repeatedly urged the individual to remain calm and follow instructions. At one point, the passenger allegedly spoke about opening a door and later mentioned wanting a cigarette, while staff warned him that continued disruptive behavior could lead to restraint measures.

Unconfirmed reports from flight tracking source AirNav Radar suggested a crew member may have been bitten during the incident. However, neither Qantas nor the authorities publicly confirmed that allegation.

After landing in Tahiti and refueling, the aircraft resumed its journey and eventually arrived in Dallas-Fort Worth several hours behind schedule.

Qantas later reiterated its position regarding onboard safety, stating that the well-being of passengers and staff remains its highest priority and emphasizing that threatening or disruptive conduct will not be tolerated.
