The Shocking Salary You’d Need to Join New York’s Top 5% Earners

Being wealthy in the Empire State comes with a hefty price tag.

According to new research from GOBankingRates, households in New York must earn at least $619,178 per year to rank among the state’s top 5% of income earners.

The financial analysis site arrived at that staggering number after reviewing data on median, lower-limit, and average household incomes. For context, the median household income in New York currently sits at $84,578 — meaning you’d have to make roughly 7.3 times more than the typical household to join the elite.

And if that sounds like an impossible benchmark, brace yourself — New York isn’t even the priciest place in the country to make the top 5%.

Across the U.S., Connecticut tops the list, where residents need to bring in a jaw-dropping $637,673 annually to qualify. California is close behind with $619,938, and Massachusetts lands in third with $619,385.

That places New York in fourth place, with New Jersey rounding out the top five at $616,334.

With three of those five states located in the tri-state area, the data highlights how the region remains a stronghold of wealth and economic influence.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, West Virginia had the lowest threshold for entry into the top 5%. Households there need $330,270 per year, about 5.7 times the state’s median income of $57,917.
