The abandoned UK airport that is set to reopen in 2029 – and it’s just 90 minutes from London

After more than a decade of sitting idle, Manston Airport in Kent may be preparing for a new chapter. Near the seaside town of Margate, the former airport is aiming to reopen by 2029, with cargo operations planned before passenger flights.

Manston has a fascinating history. Originally established as a Royal Air Force base during the First World War, it later became a commercial airport before closing in 2014. It then had a variety of temporary uses, including serving as a large vehicle storage area. It also gained attention after appearing in the 2022 film Empire of Light, directed by Sam Mendes.

The airport was purchased in 2019 by RiverOak Strategic Partners (RSP) for £16.5 million. While the company's original objective was to restart operations by 2025, rising construction and development costs delayed those plans. RSP now believes the airport could become operational in 2029 if the remaining approvals are secured.

Initially, the redevelopment is intended to support the UK's growing air freight industry. Passenger services are not part of the first phase. However, previous reports have suggested that RSP has explored launching short-haul routes with low-cost airlines, including Ryanair and EasyJet. If those plans eventually move forward, destinations such as Spain, the Netherlands, and Malta could potentially be added to the airport's network.

As part of the redevelopment process, a public consultation on proposed flight paths and airspace design took place between March and June. Residents, businesses, and other interested parties were invited to review the proposals and share their opinions before the next stage of planning.

Tony Freudmann of RiverOak Strategic Partners described the consultation as a significant milestone in the airport's revival. According to him, reopening Manston would create additional runway capacity for the UK's air cargo sector while providing a major economic boost for East Kent. He encouraged residents to participate by submitting feedback.

The consultation results have not yet been released. In the meantime, RiverOak Strategic Partners continues to publish progress updates through its official Reopening Manston project website.

If the project proceeds as planned, Manston Airport could once again become an important part of Kent's transport infrastructure before the end of the decade.
