This European capital has been named the world’s most liveable city for 2026

When people talk about what makes a city great, its food scene, nightlife, and culture often steal the spotlight. But true liveability goes far beyond weekend fun. Factors such as safety, healthcare, housing, and the environment play a significant role in determining how enjoyable daily life really is.

According to ECA International’s latest 2025–26 Location Ratings, Europe is leading the way. The organization evaluated 275 cities worldwide, measuring factors such as infrastructure, air quality, political stability, personal security, access to healthcare, housing conditions, utilities, climate, and leisure opportunities.

The results are impressive: 38 European cities secured places in the global top 50, and Europe claimed all of the top 10 positions. Taking first place overall is Bern, Switzerland, which has been named the most liveable city in the world for 2026.

ECA International attributes Europe’s success to long-term investment in high-quality infrastructure, clean public spaces and strong healthcare systems. Notably, no European city appears in the bottom 50 of the ranking, reinforcing the continent’s reputation as an attractive place to live.

So what makes Bern stand out? Switzerland’s de facto capital combines safety and stability with striking beauty. The city curves gracefully along the Aare River, and its UNESCO-listed Old Town dates back to the 12th century, offering medieval charm alongside modern comfort.

Visitors and residents alike enjoy places such as Freibad Marzili, a beloved riverside swimming spot known for its crystal-clear turquoise water. For culture lovers, Kulturzentrum Reitschule provides a creative hub hosting concerts, theatre productions and film screenings throughout the year.

Of course, life in Switzerland comes at a price. Bern’s high ranking also reflects a wider trend: many of the world’s most liveable cities are also among the most expensive. From housing to dining out, comfort and quality often require a significant budget.
