This busy Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa road is closed for the rest of the year

Visitors and residents traveling through Downtown Dubai should prepare for temporary traffic changes, as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has closed the dedicated bus-and-taxi service road at the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station until the end of 2026.

The closure is part of a major redevelopment project designed to significantly expand one of the city's busiest metro stations. During the construction period, passengers can continue their journeys by using nearby alternative parking and transport areas provided by the RTA.

Major Metro Station Upgrade Underway

The expansion project will increase the station's size by approximately 65%, allowing it to handle much larger passenger volumes. Once completed, its hourly capacity will rise from around 7,250 passengers to more than 12,300, while daily capacity is expected to reach approximately 220,000 commuters.

The improvements are intended to meet the growing demand for public transport, particularly during New Year's Eve celebrations, public holidays, and major events that attract huge crowds to Downtown Dubai.

What Will Change?

Originally announced in June 2025, the project has now been officially approved through a partnership between the RTA and Emaar.

As part of the redevelopment, the station's total area will increase from 6,700 square meters to 8,500 square meters. Planned enhancements include upgraded entrances, improved pedestrian bridges, larger concourses, additional escalators and elevators, more fare gates, and new retail outlets to enhance the overall passenger experience.

Why the Expansion Matters

According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority, the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station plays a vital role within Dubai's transport network thanks to its location next to iconic attractions such as Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, and Downtown Dubai.

He explained that the expansion is designed to improve passenger safety, comfort, and movement while preparing the station for continued growth in ridership through 2040. The additional capacity will be especially valuable during peak periods when hundreds of thousands of people visit the area.

Passenger Numbers Continue to Grow

Demand for the station has steadily increased in recent years, with passenger numbers rising by around 7.5%. The expansion is expected to ensure the metro network can continue to support Dubai's rapidly growing population and tourism industry.

Emaar: Improving the Visitor Experience

Emaar founder Mohamed Alabbar described the project as an investment in both infrastructure and quality of life. He noted that Downtown Dubai has become one of the city's most visited destinations, welcoming millions of visitors annually.

He added that expanding the metro station will make it easier for residents and tourists to reach major attractions, reduce travel times, and improve accessibility during the busiest periods of the year, including holiday seasons and the world-famous New Year's Eve celebrations.
