U.S. Issues Urgent Travel Advisory for 13 Countries Telling Americans to Depart Immediately
Travelers should take note: the U.S. Department of State has issued an urgent alert advising Americans in several Middle Eastern and Gulf nations to leave as regional instability intensifies following conflict involving Iran.
According to Mora Namdar, Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs, U.S. citizens currently in affected areas are strongly encouraged to depart as soon as possible using any available commercial flights or other transportation options.
Countries Impacted by the Advisory
The advisory applies to a wide list of destinations across the region, including Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. The warning also extends to Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip.
Updated Travel Warning Levels
Several countries—including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, the UAE, and Israel—have been elevated to Level 3, meaning travelers should carefully reconsider plans to visit.
Meanwhile, Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon are now classified under Level 4, the highest alert level, which advises Americans not to travel there under any circumstances.
Saudi Arabia remains at Level 2 (“exercise increased caution”), though officials warn against visiting certain regions—especially areas close to the Yemeni border.
Global Caution for Travelers
Beyond the Middle East, the State Department has also issued a worldwide advisory urging travelers to remain vigilant. The notice highlights the possibility of travel interruptions, particularly due to sudden airspace closures linked to ongoing military activity.
Travelers are advised to monitor updates from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for real-time guidance.
Safety Tools for Americans Abroad
The State Department is encouraging all international travelers to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This free service helps U.S. officials share important alerts and locate citizens in case of emergencies.
In response to the escalating situation, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that a round-the-clock task force has been activated to provide timely safety updates and support for Americans overseas.
“Our top priority remains the protection and well-being of U.S. citizens worldwide,” Rubio emphasized.
Escalating Conflict Across the Region
The advisory comes as tensions continue to rise. Reports from the Associated Press indicate a series of serious developments, including a drone strike attributed to Iran targeting the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which caused structural damage. At the same time, strikes have intensified in Tehran, while clashes between Hezbollah and Israel have further fueled instability.
