When every major London Christmas lights display will turn on for 2025
There’s a particular kind of magic that sweeps over London as winter approaches. The air gets crisp, the scent of roasted chestnuts drifts through the streets, and — best of all — the city starts to sparkle. From the moment the first strings of fairy lights flicker on, London transforms into a twinkling winter wonderland that never fails to lift the spirits.
December might not be here yet, but I’m already counting down the days until the capital bursts into light. Some streets are already dressed and ready — just waiting for the big switch-on. If, like me, you can’t resist wandering beneath glowing garlands with a cup of mulled wine in hand, here’s your guide to when and where London’s Christmas lights will shine this year.
The Best Time to Go
If you want to see London at its festive best, plan your visit for early December. By then, almost every display across the city will be twinkling away.
That said, mid-to-late November is also an excellent time — most of the lights are on by around the 20th, and it’s usually a bit quieter before the December crowds arrive. Either way, pack a warm coat and some touchscreen gloves — you’ll want your camera ready.

When the Lights Switch On
Some dates are official, others are still under wraps — but I’ve done some sleuthing (and a bit of educated guessing) to bring you a complete rundown of when London will start glowing.
Confirmed Dates
Oxford Street — from November 3
Oxford Street is always the first to lead the way. From November 3, its famous shopping stretch will glitter with 300,000 energy-efficient LED bulbs, saving around 75% more energy than traditional bulbs. It’s an early dose of festive cheer and a perfect place to kick off the season.
Regent Street — from November 6
The legendary ‘Spirit of Christmas’ angels return for their 10th anniversary this year, lighting up Regent Street from November 6 until January 4, 2026. Expect elegant wings of light that look exceptionally breathtaking from the middle of Piccadilly.
Carnaby Street — from November 6
Carnaby never disappoints. Each year, its display has a new creative twist, often made from repurposed elements of past decorations. The lights go on November 6, and the whole area buzzes with music, shopping, and a feel-good atmosphere.
Covent Garden — from November 12
Few spots capture London’s Christmas magic like Covent Garden. From November 12, you’ll find a giant tree, sparkling mistletoe, and glowing market halls. Stop by in the evening — it’s pure festive cinema.
Marylebone Village — from November 12
This neighborhood hosts a joyful switch-on celebration, complete with entertainment, food stalls, and local cheer. The lights sparkle from November 12, and the village's feel makes it all the more charming.
Old Spitalfields Market — from November 12
From November 12, Spitalfields becomes a winter wonderland with late-night shopping, festive events, and a kids’ treasure trail. The historic market glows beautifully against its old architecture — a hidden gem for light lovers.
Bond Street — from November 12
Expect regal glamour here: Bond Street’s 2025 display is inspired by the Crown Jewels, with lights shimmering like gemstones. The switch-on happens on November 12, and it’s one of the city’s most stylish festive moments.

Leadenhall Market — from November 13
Leadenhall is a Victorian masterpiece year-round, but from November 13, it becomes positively magical. The Lord Mayor of London herself helps light the enormous tree inside — definitely one to see in person.
Kew Gardens — from November 14
No one does Christmas lights quite like Kew Gardens. Their famous illuminated trail opens on November 14 — tickets go fast, so book early. It’s a mesmerizing experience of glowing tunnels, lakeside reflections, and sparkling installations.
Chelsea — from November 15
On November 15, Chelsea’s elegant streets burst into festive color. Expect a big street party, carol singers, and twinkling displays along the King’s Road — posh, pretty, and perfectly Christmassy.
Belgravia — from November 16
Belgravia goes all out this year with lights stretching across Motcomb Street, Elizabeth Street, Pimlico Road, and more. The switch-on party on November 16 is always a highlight, complete with local food and live music.
Soho — from November 19
This one always melts my heart. Local schoolchildren design Soho’s Christmas lights, which are switched on from November 19. It’s creative, community-driven, and full of charm.
The Shard — from November 25
From November 25, London’s tallest building puts on its annual light show, this year inspired by a painting by Gustavo Zuluaga Villegas, a member of the Shard’s own housekeeping team. A lovely story — and a breathtaking display.

Estimated Dates
King’s Cross
Expect festive magic in Coal Drops Yard and Granary Square around mid-November, including a 50-foot tree and a brand-new 60-foot one nearby.
West End
Usually glowing by the second week of November, the West End’s lights stretch across Leicester Square, Piccadilly, and St Martin’s Lane — all glitz and glamour.
The Strand
Last year’s display featured fairy figures inspired by the Savoy Theatre’s history. If it returns this year, look for it around mid- to late November.
Connaught Village
This quiet corner of London always feels like a secret find. Expect its festive switch-on in mid-November.
The Churchill Arms
Possibly London’s most Christmassy pub, with trees covering the roof and every inch of wall space. They usually light up around mid-November — an absolute must-see.
Savile Row
If you love fashion, catch Savile Row’s tailor-inspired lights — complete with shimmering shears — likely in mid-November.
Mayfair
Traditionally follows Belgravia, but may surprise us this year. Expect an early-to-mid November switch-on.
Trafalgar Square
And finally, Norway’s annual Christmas gift — the towering Trafalgar Square tree — is usually lit in early December, marking the actual arrival of the season.
