A series of wildfires broke out across Sicily on Wednesday, overwhelming emergency crews and leading to the precautionary evacuation of more than 100 residents as flames threatened communities, infrastructure, and key facilities throughout the island.

Authorities from Sicily's Civil Protection Department and the Forestry Corps coordinated firefighting efforts in multiple locations where fires endangered residential neighborhoods, countryside areas, and important transport routes.

The province of Catania experienced some of the most severe conditions, with firefighters responding to 11 separate incidents. Fires were reported in several municipalities, including Librino, Belpasso, Zafferana Etnea, Licodia Eubea, Adrano, Caltagirone, and Mascali.

To strengthen the response, several Canadair water-bombing aircraft were deployed, including one dispatched from Cagliari on the neighboring island of Sardinia.

In Agrigento province, powerful sirocco winds accelerated the spread of a major wildfire that reached the town of Santo Stefano Quisquina. As a safety measure, local authorities evacuated more than 100 people from the area.

Emergency teams focused on protecting critical infrastructure, including an oxygen storage facility, the Ignazio Attardi clinic, a fuel station, and a fireworks manufacturing site. Additional Carabinieri officers and police units were sent to support operations.

Mayor Francesco Cacciatore described the emergency as "dramatic" and appealed to residents living in the Canfuto and Bosco districts to leave their homes without delay.

The wildfire also affected transportation, forcing officials to temporarily shut down both directions of the SS118 Corleonese Agrigentina state road near Santo Stefano Quisquina.

Elsewhere on the island, Palermo province faced numerous active fires. Around Monreale, flames led to the temporary closure of the SS186 state road, while renewed fires in Castronovo di Sicilia damaged rural homes and local businesses.

Travel disruption extended to the Palermo–Catania motorway, where authorities closed a section near the Irosa junction because of the advancing fires.

Additional wildfire outbreaks were reported across the provinces of Syracuse, Trapani, Enna, Messina, and Caltanissetta. Fires were also recorded near a wind farm in Alia and in the municipalities of Salemi, Mazara del Vallo, Piazza Armerina, and Nissoria, highlighting the widespread nature of the emergency across Sicily.
