There’s A Gorgeous Swimming Pool Inside A Converted Church In East London
Looking for one of London's most unusual wellness destinations? Hidden inside a beautifully restored church in East London is a spectacular swimming pool that combines historic architecture with modern luxury.
Located in Repton Park, Woodford Green, this unique health club occupies the former chapel of a historic psychiatric hospital. The site, once known as the London County Lunatic Asylum, operated from 1893 until its closure in 1997. Today, the grounds have been transformed into an elegant residential development, while the chapel has been given a new, impressive purpose.
Instead of pews and worshippers, visitors are greeted by a striking 24-meter indoor swimming pool that stretches beneath soaring vaulted ceilings. Many of the building's original architectural details have been carefully preserved, including its Gothic arches and colorful stained-glass windows, creating an atmosphere unlike any other leisure center in London.

One of the most fascinating features is the former confessional, which has been creatively repurposed into a sauna. Alongside the sauna, guests can also enjoy a steam room, a jacuzzi, and a fully equipped gym, making it an ideal destination for relaxation and fitness in an extraordinary setting.
The combination of historic character and contemporary wellness facilities makes this one of London's hidden gems, offering visitors the chance to swim and unwind in a building with a remarkable past.
You'll find the Virgin Active health club at Repton Park, Manor Road, Woodford Green, IG8 8GN. Access to the facilities is available to Virgin Active members.
