As temperatures rise across New York City, locals and visitors alike are always on the hunt for the best places to escape the summer heat. This year, one of the city’s most impressive outdoor attractions is once again welcoming swimmers: the Gottesman Pool at the Davis Center in Central Park.

Located near the northern end of the park, this modern aquatic complex is entering its second summer season and offers free admission to everyone.

A Major Transformation in Central Park

The Gottesman Pool is part of the ambitious $160 million Davis Center redevelopment project, completed in 2025. The project replaced the aging Lasker Pool and Rink, introducing a contemporary recreational space that better connects the natural landscapes of Central Park.

One of the most remarkable features of the new facility is its size. Measuring approximately 285 feet long and 120 feet wide, the pool exceeds the dimensions of a standard Olympic swimming pool, making it one of the largest public swimming destinations in New York City.

The pool can welcome up to 1,000 swimmers per day, creating plenty of space for families, casual swimmers, and organized community programs throughout the season.

Designed to Blend with Nature

Beyond its impressive scale, the Davis Center was carefully designed to complement the surrounding environment. Created by Susan T. Rodriguez Architecture | Design in collaboration with Mitchell Giurgola Architects, the project restores connections between the Harlem Meer and the North Woods, two of Central Park’s most scenic areas.

Visitors will find a range of convenient amenities, including changing facilities, lockers, restrooms, and nearby picnic areas, making it easy to spend an entire day enjoying the park.

More Than Just a Summer Attraction

What makes the Gottesman Pool unique is its year-round versatility. While it serves as a swimming destination during the warmer months, the space transforms throughout the year to meet seasonal needs.

During winter, the pool area becomes an ice-skating rink, while spring and autumn bring the Harlem Oval, a multi-purpose turf field designed for recreation and community activities.

Summer 2026 Season Information

The 2026 swimming season begins on June 27 and continues through September 13. Admission is free, and visitors do not need to present identification to enter.

In addition to open swimming sessions, NYC Parks offers a variety of community programs, including swimming lessons, wellness activities, and seasonal events designed for all ages.

Because the facility is expected to attract large crowds during peak summer weekends and holidays, arriving early is highly recommended.

Visitors should also note that the pool closes daily between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM for routine cleaning and maintenance.

Important Visitor Guidelines

Before heading to the pool, be aware of a few rules. A plain white shirt is required while on the pool deck, and alcoholic beverages are not permitted anywhere within the facility.
