Dog waits 2 weeks where his family left him
By the time Eva zu Beck brought Atlas into her home, the German shepherd had spent weeks avoiding anyone who tried to help him. Once he was safe, however, his affectionate, playful personality began to emerge.
His rescue started with a moment of confusion. Zu Beck spotted a German shepherd near a busy road in the small Polish village where she lives and briefly wondered whether her own dog had escaped. A closer look revealed an unfamiliar animal with matted fur who appeared severely underfed and distressed.
According to the account zu Beck shared on Instagram, residents told her the dog had been abandoned roughly two weeks earlier. He continued lingering near the same street corner, approaching cars as they slowed down. To Zu Beck, it seemed he was waiting for the person who had left him there.
Getting him away from the road proved difficult. Local authorities had already tried to catch him, but he would retreat into the woods whenever someone approached.
Zu Beck began visiting with food, patiently giving him opportunities to become comfortable around her. Over several days, his wariness eased enough that he accepted food from her hand.
Eventually, with the aid of a tranquilizer, she was able to lift him into her truck. She took him to a veterinarian, then brought him home and named him Atlas.
In that calmer setting, the frightened dog began behaving very differently. He became playful and affectionate, revealing a side of himself that had been hard to see while he struggled to survive outdoors.
About a month after the rescue, Zu Beck reported that Atlas was continuing to gain confidence. She had grown attached to him, but with a large German shepherd already in her care, she wanted to find a home where he could receive more individual attention.
At the time of her update, a prospective adopter was lined up. The move had not happened yet, but Atlas was already safe and being cared for as preparations for his next chapter took shape.
