Italy condemns Houthi attacks on Riyadh airport, warns citizens against travel

Italy has called for an end to attacks on civilian infrastructure following Houthi strikes on Riyadh’s international airport, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressing support for Saudi Arabia.

Meloni condemned the attacks and said strikes against civilians and civilian facilities must stop. She also reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to working with regional partners to ease tensions, strengthen stability and safeguard freedom of navigation.

The Italian response extends beyond airport security. Maritime routes through the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait remain a central concern, linking developments in Saudi Arabia and Yemen to international trade.

According to Decode39’s October 12 report, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also denounced the attacks and urged renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent the conflict from escalating. He reiterated Italy’s backing for UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg and efforts to resume political negotiations, while emphasizing the protection of Yemeni civilians and shipping in the Red Sea.

Decode39 also reported that Italy’s Foreign Ministry advised Italian citizens against nonessential travel near Riyadh’s airport and against using it for departures or arrivals. Citizens were directed to consult the ministry’s Viaggiare Sicuri website for updates and to contact the Italian Embassy in Riyadh or the ministry’s Crisis Unit for assistance.
