Nine aboard Learjet that crashed in Palm Beach County neighborhood

A Learjet 60 carrying nine people crashed in a residential area of Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday, November 1, prompting an emergency response and road closures.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas. It crashed near Cresthaven at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation, with the FAA also participating.

Video from the scene showed the jet descending steeply before an explosion sent flames and dark smoke above the surrounding neighborhood. The impact left a crater near a busy roadway. An Austin airport spokesperson identified the private aircraft by its registration, N722BD, according to the Associated Press.

Early accounts differed on casualties. Although some outlets reported multiple deaths, the Associated Press said authorities had not yet confirmed whether anyone aboard or on the ground had been killed or injured. Damage to nearby homes also remained unclear in its report.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office closed Military Trail in both directions between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. Drivers were advised to avoid the area and take alternative routes while emergency personnel worked at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains unknown. Flight-tracking information reported by CNN indicated a rapid loss of altitude before the data stopped, but that information alone does not establish what caused the aircraft to descend. Investigators have not yet announced their findings.

This is a developing story. Casualty figures and other details remain subject to official confirmation.
