Plane nosedives into busy highway killing two in huge fireball
A small aircraft crashed onto a busy stretch of the A21 motorway in Italy’s Brescia province around noon today, bursting into a massive fireball that stunned passing drivers.
Traffic cameras captured the terrifying moment as the plane dove straight into the road, erupting into flames upon impact. The wreckage was scattered across the highway, leaving a trail of destruction — but miraculously, the aircraft didn’t directly strike any vehicles before it hit the ground.
Although no cars were directly hit, at least two vehicles were seen driving through the flames. Two motorists suffered injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fortunately, their injuries are not considered life-threatening, according to local reports.
Tragically, the two individuals onboard the plane — a 75-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman — were both killed in the crash.
Emergency responders quickly closed the highway, as fire crews worked to extinguish the intense blaze. The fire caused severe damage to the road surface due to burning fuel and flying debris.
The aircraft had departed from Gagnano Trebbiense airstrip in the Piacenza region. Since ultralight planes are not required to file a flight plan, there was no declared destination at the time of takeoff.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash. A flight safety expert from Italy’s National Agency for Flight Safety is expected to arrive on the scene today. Meanwhile, the local prosecutor's office has opened a preliminary manslaughter investigation, local media reported.
