The Plaza Hotel set to close for at least 4 years to restore historic facade
Visitors to New York will face a lengthy pause in stays at the Plaza Hotel, which is scheduled to close in January 2027 for at least four years. The shutdown will allow restoration of the historic Fifth Avenue property’s exterior, according to operator Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, as ABC7 reported.
The project involves the landmark façade of the 18-story Midtown Manhattan building. Its protected architectural features make the work complex, requiring extensive coordination and compliance with historic preservation requirements. Details of how the restoration will proceed remain under review. The New York Times first reported the announcement.

The planned closure marks another chapter for a hotel that has welcomed guests since 1907. Beyond its architecture and craftsmanship, the Plaza has become familiar to audiences through its appearances in popular culture. In the 1992 film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Macaulay Culkin’s character, Kevin McCallister, famously checks in using his father’s credit card.
A January 2027 shutdown lasting at least four years would place reopening in 2031 at the earliest. That remains an estimate based on the announced duration, rather than a confirmed reopening date.
