US travelers warned to ‘prepare a will’ if they visit popular vacation spot

Americans planning a trip to Kenya are being urged to reassess their plans after the US State Department issued a Level 3 travel advisory on October 19, 2026.

The warning identifies health concerns, crime, kidnapping, terrorism, civil unrest, and road safety as risks. Certain locations carry the stronger Level 4 recommendation to avoid travel entirely, including Nairobi’s Eastleigh and Kibera neighborhoods.

Among its emergency planning recommendations, the department advises visitors to prepare a will and agree on a way for relatives to verify their identity and survival if they are kidnapped.

Access to healthcare is another concern. Treatment options outside major cities can be limited, facilities may require advance payment, and serious conditions could require evacuation at the traveler’s expense.

The advisory also warns that demonstrations can become violent and disrupt transportation. Vehicles carrying Americans, including safari tourists, have previously been attacked.

For those who proceed with their visit, officials recommend avoiding protests, maintaining regular contact with family, and preparing an independent emergency departure plan. Travelers should review the full advisory for restrictions affecting their itinerary and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program for government alerts.
