Oxford Street Will Go Car-Free For One Day In September
London’s legendary Oxford Street — the city’s shopping epicentre — is set to swap traffic for people this September. For one day only, the famous boulevard will be closed to vehicles, offering a glimpse of what a fully pedestrianised future could look like.
On Saturday, September 21, between 12 pm and 8 pm, the street will host “This Is Oxford Street”, a free public celebration championed by Mayor Sadiq Khan. During this time, cars, buses, and taxis will be barred, transforming the busy shopping strip into a festival-style pedestrian zone.

Public support and what’s next
Londoners have shown strong enthusiasm for the idea. A recent survey revealed that nearly 70% support the temporary car-free plan, while around two-thirds favour a fully pedestrianised Oxford Street.
This trial day aims to spark imaginations about what the West End could become — from more outdoor events to relaxed pavement dining.
Looking further ahead, the mayor has expressed hopes of making the change permanent by 2027. Plans include establishing a mayoral development corporation in 2026, which would oversee the regeneration of Oxford Street and its surrounding areas.
Public consultations are also expected regarding the 16 bus routes currently serving the street, ensuring that transport links remain effective if pedestrianisation goes ahead.
For now, both Londoners and tourists are encouraged to save the date and discover Oxford Street in a whole new way this September.
